SUVs to America: Welcome back, America!
We Americans love our SUVs. We love the thought that we can go off-roading at a moment’s notice even if the only time our SUV has seen mud was when we hit that pothole on Tuesday. We love the room, we love the size, we love the power! America has always been a nation of manifest destiny; ever expanding, ever moving, ever exploring. We love the idea of being King of the Road! Our SUVs give us a view towering high over the little hybrids and small, dinky cars. We can look forward and see that the reason we’re stuck in traffic is because everyone is slowing down to rubberneck as someone gets a ticket (hint: he’s got someone pulled over already…so RUN! Slowing down to see him hand the poor sap a ticket is only screwing up traffic, so keep driving, rubbernecker!).
We love everything about our SUVs……except the cost. It costs a lot of money to buy an SUV and it cost a lot of money to fill the tank on those bad boys of the ecology. And so, when the economy tanked about four years ago and gas jumped to $4/gal, we got scared. We thought it was the mark of things to come. We were spiraling downward, out of control. MAYDAY! MAYDAY! SOS! America was headed to a Mad Max -esque future where the commodities of fuel, oil, and clean water were too expensive to have. And we dumped our SUVs like they yesterday’s cat litter. Americans sold their SUVs for reduced rates, some as low as half price. The dealerships couldn’t move them off their lots and GM was forced to close down their HUMMER division. Americans took their cash and bought hybrid cars and the tiny Prius became king of the road. Hollywood celebrities made it cool to drive a $20K foreign four cylinder ladybug of a car and gas guzzling roadhog SUVs were looked down upon (or up at, depending on if they were in traffic side-by-side lol) by the “green” people.
But the heart wants what the heart wants. We’re Americans. We love cheeseburgers, the NFL, cheerleaders, fireworks and apple pie. And we love our SUVs. Like trusty dogs, they’re there waiting for us. The Equinox, the Escapes, even the mighty Suburbans have been waiting patiently for us to come home. And according to the numbers, that’s exactly what we’ve been doing. All across the nation, Americans are returning to our SUVs, coming back to the King of the Road status in our neighborhoods, returning for elbow room, loving that little 4X4 decal above the rear bumper.
Welcome back, America.
My Car Doc: Auto 101 Tip: Low Tires
If you don’t have enough air in your tires, it makes the tires run on the outside edges of the tire. This causes premature wear and tear. I don’t know where you get your tires for free, but I don’t. At $100 each or more, I want those babies to last as long as possible! A quick and easy way to do this is to make sure you aren’t running on tires that are low on air.

My Car Doc: Auto 101 Tip: Cracked Belts!
Beware the cracked belts of November! They become the broken belts of December!
Seriously though, I always recommend replacing a cracked belt before the harsh temperatures of winter hit. Think about it like this: your serpentine belt is like a big ol’ rubber band with nylon threads sewn into it. So when it gets cold, rubber gets a bit more stiff and brittle. A belt that is cracked is more likely to snap in subfreezing temperatures.
But John, what happens if my belt snaps? Good question, I’m glad you asked! Your car DIES! The first thing you’ll notice is that your car will be difficult to steer. This is because the power steering pump isn’t being driven by the belt any more. Then you’ll see the battery light come on on your dash. This is because the alternator is no longer being energized by the motion of the belt and you’re running off the electrical power of your battery now. That battery is only meant to get your car started and then rest and get recharged. After your car is started, the alternator does all the work. Unless your belt snaps. Then you’re back to the battery….and depending on how many electronics you have on at the time (headlights, radio, wipers, air conditioner, heater, et cetera) you have 1-5 miles to get off the side of the road and to a safe place. THAT’S IT! Don’t try to push it further because YOU WILL GET STRANDED.
So don’t get stranded, take care of the belt BEFORE a minor problem becomes a major pain.

My Car Doc Auto 101 tip: Car Recalls!
Are you sure your car is up to snuff? Has there been a recall that you don’t know about? Or maybe you bought your car used and the manufacturer doesn’t know to send you a notice. The best way to make sure your car has all the safety recalls taken care of is to check with your local dealership’s service dept (who can run the VIN number) or go to www.AutoRecalls.us

My Car Doc: Auto 101 Tip
Show of hands: When was the last time you changed your PCV valve?
Okay, show of hands: how many of you even know what a PCV valve is? lol
It’s okay, not many people know what a PCV valve is or what it does. It’s a small filter on most vehicles that should be changed every 20,000 miles or so. Here’s the good news: it’s really inexpensive and easy to do. Just ask and I’ll be happy to help!

My Car Doc: Auto 101 Tip
At the FIRST HINT of brake issues, please get them fixed immediately. This isn’t just me talking as your mechanic, this is obviously a safety issue as well. And if that’s not a big enough issue, it’s also a financial issue. The longer you let faulty brakes go, the more likely you are to need the rotors replaced as well. This will likely double the cost of the brake repair.
